Choosing A Business Domain Name: Elements Of A Perfect Domain

One of the most important decisions that someone as a business owner makes, besides deciding to going online with the business, is creating a website for the same. Your website is the storefront of your business on the internet. As such, it is the most important thing that you have and proper care must be taken to craft it in a solid manner.

Creating a top-notch website for your business and optimizing it to stand out in Google Ranking is an ongoing process that requires you to keep modifying, updating and adapting elements on a regular basis to stand at par with the search engine trends. However, the success of all of it depends on how well you have laid the first brick.

This foundational thing that I’m talking about is the domain name for your website. Choosing a business domain name that represents your business perfectly is the most important thing at the initial stage. Once created, it cannot be altered. Therefore, it becomes crucial that you make a choice that turns out to be effective in the long run.

That being said, here’s a guide from me to help you understand what goes into getting a perfect business domain and hopefully assist you in making the right choice.

Something That’s Easy To Return To Mind

Probably the most important characteristic of a solid domain, in my experienced opinion, is its ability to stick in the mind of the visitor. Having a domain name that is easy to remember has countless benefits to it that can easily help you show out from your fellow competitors.

I’m sure that I speak for everyone when I say that we tend to revisit those websites often that are easy to remember, spell and have an inviting appeal to them. If potential customers who are willing to engage with what you have to offer can easily find you and reach out to you, it means that you are doing the right things. The first step and the most effective one in this direction is to get a domain name that fulfills this criterion.

The Right Length Of The Domain Name

The length of the domain or the number of characters you use in it is an important factor that decides the position of your domain name on the scale of 1-10. Hitting the right length is crucial as it has numerous attributes to it.

The length plays a significant role in the element that we have just discussed- the ability of the name to be easily remembered. The shorter it is, the easier it gets to remember and also spell out. In fact, visitors tend to confuse more while spelling out a long web domain as compared to a shorter one.

What should be the right length then? Well, anything around/under 20 characters is the best that you can get. Not only does it make it easier for customers to find you but also helps you represent your business in the right way.

Uniquely Represents Your Unique Business

Talking of representation brings me to this next point- representation of your business. I know that your business is unqiue in the way you want to deal with your customers, your motives and everything else. Such unique business needs to be represented equally uniquely.

A very common tendencies of businesses that are newly getting in the market is checking out and studying their competitors. While proper competitive analysis is quintessential and something that I emphasize myself, it can get a little tricky when one starts to replicate the competitors. The goal should be to study them and do things better than them and not copying them. Once you start replicating others, you lose your most valuable attribute- your originality.

I want you to keep that same originality in the domain name as well. Doing so will ensure that your brand bears the mark of uniqueness through and through.

Keeping It Concise Yet Meaningful

The next things that a successful domain name has as its core element are clarity, conciseness and a relevant meaning to it. Let me explain how you can ensure these.

While trying to create a domain that is unqiue enough to stand out in the market, there is a possibility of you messing the whole thing up. For example, let’s say that you are looking for a unqiue domain name for your car washing business. With the motive of finding something that stands out, you end up deciding to spell the word in a way that is conventionally wrong, yet in your opinion, makes sense. Example might include spelling ‘CAR’ as ‘KAR’ or anything else. You get the point.

While prima facie, such names do not appear to be any trouble, things can turn out to be completely adverse when you have customers who heard about your company from someone and are trying to look you up on the internet and only end up having a tough time finding you out. Not only does it entail the risk of annoying the customer, it also translates to losing potential customers too.

We don’t want that. Therefore, opt for something that is unqiue, concise yet has relevancy and meaning attached to it at the same time.

Use Of The Appropriate Extension

Your business domain’s extension plays a major role in the efficiency of your domain. I think we have all, for at least once, tried to search a company on the internet by simply typing in its business name and ended up with two websites suggested to us, both having the exact same name, spelled in the exact same way with the only difference in the extension, one has a .com extension while the other a .net one.

Now, we are left wondering which is the one we came here looking for. This example has more than one side to it. Let me explain. One thing that I’d like you to understand is that if you are in a situation where the domain name that you were looking to use is already in use under a .com extension and you do not want to compromise with the name, you can opt for other extensions such as .net etc.

The other thing is that, whenever we are confronted with two websites with same domain name except their extensions, as in the above example, we are more likely to settle for the .com one because that’s the conventional way. It is for the same reason that I do not recommend substituting a name that is already in use with an extension other than .com. However, it’s all up to you to decide. Just make sure that your choice is wise.

Simple is Effective.

When it comes to selecting the perfect business domain for your website, these are the things that you need to keep in mind. However you also need to understand that it all boils down to the efficiency of your domain name. All that we do is to make it as effective and as efficient in drawing in customers to our business as we can. On that note, I’d like to reinstate that I’ve always been an advocate of the notion ‘Simple is Effective’ and that is applicable everywhere.

So go ahead and make the right choice to lay down the first brick of your dream project in the perfect manner.
